DIGICRIMJUS: New challenges for teaching researching and practicing criminal law in the digital age

Higher Education Strategic Partnership on Digitalisation and Criminal Law

The University of Szeged (institute of criminal law, Prof. Dr. Krisztina Karsai), the University of Konstanz (chair of criminal law, Prof. Dr. Liane Wörner, LL.M. UW Madison) and the University of Istanbul (institute of criminal law, Prof. Dr. Adem Sözüer) have formed a higher education partnership focusing on the new challenges of criminal law in the digital age. The three partner’s application ranked first among all Hungarian initiatives and has been supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme in the amount of EUR 150 000.

DIGICRIMJUS is designed around the following four cornerstones: digitalization - criminal law & justice - legal comparison – teaching & learning. Its main topic is the applicability of criminal law in today’s information society. In this framework members of the cohort will not only focus on traditional questions of criminal law (such as criminal responsibility in cases where artificial intelligence has been applied), but also on other issues in the criminal justice system (such as investigating cybercrime or online visiting hours in prisons). The results of the three year’s research project (2020/21-2023/24) will be made widely available in the form of comprehensive study materials designed for the new generation of law students and future lawyers. Apart from this, raising social awareness on digitalisation and criminal law is a further important objective of the project.

The strategic partnership also aims on the foundation of a future joint LL.M. programme offered by the three renowned universities on digitalization of criminal law and comparative criminal law. .(2020-1-HU01-KA203-078670)
