Crossing Lines – or the Significance of Borders

9 June 2023

Kari Tanácsterem (1st floor), Faculty of Law (Tisza Lajos Avenue 54, Szeged)

Synopsis

In the past three years, two border crossings have plunged Europe into crisis: one was the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, which caused chaos and disruption across national borders. The other is the Russia-Ukraine war that broke out a year ago, where the Russians, in violation of several international treaties, invaded Ukraine, establishing new border lines that are still not recognized by the international community.

The conference’s core focus is the question of borders, boundaries, legal regulation, and legitimacy. As a result, the committee welcomed abstracts related to the following topics:

  • the state-theoretical, legal, historical, and cultural aspects of the border as a concept;
  • the legal regulation, jurisprudence, and international legal relevance of the border;
  • the role of the border in international relations (politics, migration, trade);
  • the role of the border in a globalized world and in the EU (Schengen);
  • and the relationship between border and digitalization.

The event is carried out with the support of the programs of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice enhancing the standards of legal education (IX-SZ/ID/513/2/2022).
